Musical Director

Michael HaslamMichael Haslam won a scholarship to read music at Christ Church, Oxford University and continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he became Professor of Ensemble Singing.

Michael has been Musical Director for: Play Without Words (Olivier Award for Best Entertainment); Honk! The Ugly Duckling (Olivier Award for Best New Musical); The Wind in the Willows; The Rose Tattoo; Les Parents Terribles; and The Children’s Hour (Royal National Theatre). He also conducted Sunday In The Park With George and Sweeney Todd.

West End includes: Musical Supervision on Good, Habeas Corpus and Associate Musical Director on La Cava; Side By Side By Sondheim; The Sneeze; Mr. & Mrs. Nobody; Maureen Lipman’s Live & Kidding; and Maria Friedman’s By Extra Special Arrangement (Olivier Award for Best Entertainment). He also conducted the orchestra on Maria Friedman’s debut solo album. Musical Director for Stephen Fry’s Cinderella (Old Vic); Olivier Award-winning La Cage Aux Folles (Playhouse); Pleasure’s Progress (Royal Opera House Linbury Studio).

Other work includes: Musical Director for an event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Coronation for HM Queen Elizabeth II; accompanist for Maria Friedman’s residencies (The Carlyle, New York).

In addition to his work in theatre, Michael has performed and accompanied many recitals in London and Europe, giving the first performance of the Philip Marshall piano concerto in Lincoln Minster. For three years Michael played for Piano Circus, with whom he made five CDs, and he has recorded, in Berlin, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, with Vladimir Ashkenazy.
